Why we startup this game?

Main Challenges

PC Limitation

At that time, Chinese players did not have a power PC configuration to play 3d games, we kept the installation package size to 200 Megabite, and it could be smoothly run on any computer.
当时的中国玩家电脑配置都不高,要充分考虑游戏安装包大小,和能在任何一个电脑上都能流畅运行

UI design

No UI designer, so I do finished all UI assets.
因为没有UI设计师,当时没有这个职务,很意外吧,所以我就来做这个职务,所有的UI都是我绘制的

Designer Hire

Difficult to hire artist,
当时能找到的游戏设计师很少,而且很多都不会用3d软件,2d的把控能力不好,需要进一步培训,
根据Artist的水平情况,我必须既要保证场景的美观,也要把图形制作的难度降低到最低,便于快速生产,
角色需要支持换装系统,确保游戏有个性化收费,

而且由于人力不足,熟练把控建筑3d的美术不够,所以有很大一部分建筑是我制作的

Develop Duration

Designers are few, and many do not use 3d software. 2d control ability is not good enough and needs further training.
To make a demo in 2 months.
The game style was completely new. We had to start from empty paper.
开发的周期是一年,游戏引擎和玩法都是全新的,从0开始的,而且要在2个月内做出Demo
游戏风格是全新的,我们必须从0开始。

My Process Memo

Startup

In 2 months, I completed the most basic demo by myself,
Start recruiting, I alone set the basic rules of the art field。
I first started designing the primary character and scene architecture style.
Define the method of map stitching down to the pixel level, and settle with the program so that this framework will not be modified later.
在游戏项目确立之前的2个月,我一个人完成了最基本的Demo,具有一个角色,一个精美的场景,程序也完成了基本的行走,寻路算法,和仍投骰子行走的功能,公司认可后,我们就能开始招人了,我一个人就把美术领域的基本规则定下来了,后面基本没有改变太多
我首先开始设计基本的角色和场景建筑风格,
定义地图拼接的方法,精确到像素级,并和程序定下来,以后这个框架不会再修改了。

UI Design

I’ll finish all the UI in the game, have the experience of making game UI for the first time, and learn many skills.
团队中没有UI设计师,UI需要熟练的Photoshop使用技巧,我就完成游戏中所有的UI,第一次有了游戏UI制作的经验,学习了不少技巧,也找到了乐趣

Hiring& Training&Difine

After designing the basic avatar character dressing system, and training new designers to move forward following the style, I can leave the character piece
drew a spell of architectural design final draft, set the style basis for the original painting designer.
同时就开始招募原画设计师,和2d美术设计师,
设计了基本的avatar角色换装系统后,培训新的设计师,按照风格继续往前推进,我可以离开角色这一块了,

绘制了一拼建筑设定稿,为原画设计师定下了风格基础,由一位原画设计师接管后续场景设计
从招聘的3d设计师中选出一位能力较强,沟通能力好的人制作有所有的建筑,

 

Research Different Game Style

Tried 3 styles and finally chose the third style; this style perspective is 45 degrees, 3d scene modeling + 2D low cost, good results.
大概尝试了3种风格,最终选择了第三种风格,这种风格视角是45度,3d场景建模+2D成本低,效果好的风格,

 

Major Design Decision

  • Technology selection: I choose 2D characters + 3D modeling scenes, which significantly reduces designers’ training difficulty and cost.
    技术选型:我选择2D角色+3D建模场景,大大降低了设计师的培训难度和成本,
  • 2D game, to ensure the most exquisite picture of the gorgeous, and all player’s can play with low configuration.
    纯2D游戏,保证最精致的画面的精美,游戏要求的配置也非常低,玩家的最普通的电脑也能玩的起来
  • no UI designer, there was no such position then. It was very unexpected, so I came to do this position
    因为没有UI设计师,当时没有这个职务,很意外吧,所以我就来做这个职务,

Final Result

  • We finally officially launched in four months with 120,000 monthly average online users and 40,000 daily active users.
    这我们最终在四个月正式上线,月均在线人数120,000人,日活跃40000人,
  • The game installation package is about 240MB, very easy to install, and any ordinary PC computer can run smoothly.
    游戏安装包240MB左右,非常便于安装,而且任何普通PC电脑都可以非常流畅的运行
  • The game operated from 2006 to March 2011, accompanying us for 6+ years, and I bought a house in Shanghai with the bonus.
    这个游戏运营7年半,我用奖金在上海付了首付了

Learnings

  • UI can make users happy, and graphics are attractive simultaneously, as well as the user experience. From then on, I embarked on the road of a professional UI designer.
    UI设计是很有趣的一个工作,也很有意义,是很多人没有注意到的事情,好的UI能让用户愉快,图形做的吸引人的同时,而且也要注意用户体验,从那以后,我就走上了职业UI设计师的道路
